This six-week course is an introduction to the martial art of Aikido. You will learn decisive techniques of defense (throws, joint-locks, strikes and immobilizations) as well as the development of basic ukemi (falling training) to protect yourself. The mechanics of Aikido are based on refined, unforced movements using the entire body, which allow Aikido to be practiced safely and successfully by all, regardless of age, size, or strength. No previous training is required. You should wear light, loose-fitting clothing (such as t-shirt and sweatpants) or gi if you have one. Here you will learn basic meditation and breathing techniques to calm the mind, reduce stress, increase energy, and promote overall well being. You will practice guided meditations with an emphasis on mindfulness and breathing. You will also learn how to elicit the relaxation response in the body using progressive muscle relaxation.
